Freedom for All Americans is the bipartisan campaign to secure full nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ people nationwide. Freedom for All Americans includes two separate entities – Freedom for All Americans and Freedom for All Americans Education Fund, collectively referred to as Freedom for All Americans (FFAA). Our work brings together conservatives and progressives, businesses large and small, people of faith, and allies from all walks of life to make the case for comprehensive non-discrimination protections that ensure everyone is treated fairly and equally.
With the ultimate goal of securing nationwide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ Americans, Freedom for All Americans works at the federal, state, and local level to hold the line on past victories, make the case that nondiscrimination is a real and urgent need, and demonstrate that America is ready for a national solution. Founded in 2015, FFAA is a virtual organization with staff located across the country.
Freedom for All Americans is seeking a Chief Communications Officer to start in August of 2019.
The Chief Communications Officer is responsible for developing and implementing a communications strategy that will help win comprehensive nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ people nationwide for 2025. The Chief Communications Officer leads and manages a dynamic team of 8+ communications/public affairs staff.
The Chief Communications Officer should be an individual deeply committed to advancing LGBTQ equality and LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections, as well as someone comfortable managing a remote team.
The Chief Communications Officer reports to the CEO. People of color; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gender diverse people; women; and people of all political backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create and execute a national communications plan and narrative strategy for FFAA’s work to win comprehensive nondiscrimination protections for all LGBTQ people nationwide by 2025. Ensure that all external communications work is tied to this plan.
- Develop and implement communications strategies at federal and state levels that support the overarching FFAA goal.
- Manage 8+ members of the public affairs department in fulfilling their responsibilities and manage their continued growth as movement communications leaders.
- Cultivate effective integration of both traditional earned media and digital strategies in FFAA’s communications work.
- Ensure that FFAA has strong relationships with key media that results in news coverage consistent with messaging and strategies.
- Oversee work to ensure that FFAA utilizes current and emerging best practices in digital strategies/engagement.
- Ensure that FFAA’s branding and messaging is consistently conveyed across all platforms and in all external communications, including those for key stakeholder such as business partners and funders.
- Ensure FFAA staff, assets, campaigns, and projects are kept up-to-date on and employing messaging best practices, and coordinate proactively with external partners to assist with identifying and addressing emerging research needs.
- Identify and elevate opportunities within the organization and externally that help drive the national narrative strategy.
- Work closely with other staff to provide timely and effective messaging guidance and research. Ensure that message strategy is reflected in all external communications.
- Work closely with key staff to align goals, strategies, and tactics across the organization.
- Develop and manage a public affairs/communications budget
Our ideal candidate will…
- Be deeply committed to advancing LGBTQ equality and nondiscrimination protections.
- Have 10+ years of experience in nonprofit, strategic communications, management, advocacy and/or campaign and digital media experience. At least 5 of those years should be dedicated to communications in an advocacy context.
- Have fluency in both traditional earned media and digital tactics.
- Bring existing strong relationships with nationwide media.
- Have experience hiring and managing staff.
- Have experience working with message research to inform messaging strategies and communications tactics.
- Be extremely detail oriented, responsive, organized, communicative, and flexible.
- Demonstrate ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, including prioritizing appropriately and tracking and reporting progress internally and to funders.
- Have the ability to manage, support, and grow multiple remote staff members.
- Have experience and comfort working with technology that fosters a supportive remote work climate.
- Have excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Thrive in a fast-paced, campaign environment and adapt to a quickly changing landscape.
- Simultaneously work independently and collaboratively in a team-based remote environment with minimal supervision.
- Be able to travel frequently and work remotely.
LOCATION AND TRAVEL
This is a remote team, but candidates for this position should be based in Washington, D.C. or be willing to relocate. Candidates must be able to work from home and feel comfortable frequently engaging with colleagues and partners by phone, video conference, email, and other digital communications tools. FFAA will provide all of the tools necessary to succeed in this position.
This position requires significant travel, including at least 2 staff retreats, ad hoc organizational meetings, movement gatherings, and more.
Salary is commensurate with experience. [$100,000 – $139,000]
