Jared Polis & Kate Brown Win Historic Gubernatorial Races in Colorado, OregonNovember 6, 2018 • 11:25 pm
WASHINGTON — Jared Polis was elected governor of Colorado tonight – making the five-term Member of Congress the first openly gay man elected governor in any state. In Oregon, Kate Brown won a full-term in the governor’s mansion — she had previously won a special election in 2016. Brown made history two years ago as the first openly bisexual person elected governor, and extends her historic streak tonight by becoming the first openly bi person to win a full gubernatorial term. Freedom for All Americans’ CEO, Masen Davis released the following statement:
“More LGBTQ Americans ran for office this year than ever before before — and many are winning. It’s clear voters in Colorado and Oregon saw Jared Polis and Kate Brown not just as members of the LGBTQ community, but as strong and qualified candidates, with with the skills and ideas to successfully lead their states. But with their victories, Governor Brown and Rep. Polis have chipped away at barriers for thousands in the LGBTQ community who felt their voices were not heard and they had no seat at the table. Policy making is done best when all kinds of people are represented. Congratulations to both Jared Polis and Governor Kate Brown – we thank you for your commitment to ensuring LGBTQ Americans have a voice at the table.”
The gubernatorial races in Oregon and Colorado weren’t the only places tonight where history was on the line for LGBTQ people. The largest LGBTQ equality campaign this year was won in Massachusetts, where residents today voted on whether to uphold the Bay State’s law protecting transgender people from discrimination. The Freedom for All Massachusetts campaign led the largest bipartisan coalition in the nation’s history to educate people about what it means to be transgender, and what transgender nondiscrimination protections do and don’t do. A Yes on 3 victory in Massachusetts tonight made the Bay State the first in the nation to affirm transgender nondiscrimination protections at the ballot. Freedom for All Americans is proud to be a founding national partner, and one of the top contributors, to the Freedom for All Massachusetts campaign.
