Freedom for All Americans Joins 36 Groups Demanding Withdrawal of Judicial Nominee Jeff Mateer

This week Freedom for All Americans was proud to join with 35 other organizations in strongly opposing Jeff Mateer’s nomination to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The federal judgeship, appointed by President Donald Trump, is too important to leave in the hands of a vehemently anti-LGBTQ person with a storied history of discrimination.

In a letter coordinated by Lambda Legal, Freedom for All Americans stood with 35 other LGBTQ organizations in requesting that the members of the United States Senate oppose his nomination.

From the letter:

Through his words and actions, Mr. Mateer has disqualified himself from any position of public trust. In particular, his brazen contempt for LGBT people renders him wholly unfit for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench. We urge you to demand that his nomination be withdrawn immediately.
Mr. Mateer has spent his professional life denigrating and vilifying LGBT people and their
families. While his anti-LGBT record is too voluminous to detail in this short letter, a few examples stand out. In a 2015 speech titled “The Church and Homosexuality,” Mr. Mateer openly mocked a transgender girl whose parents successfully sued her elementary school for preventing her from using the girls’ bathroom.
Mr. Mateer then proceeded to assert that transgender children were evidence of “how Satan’s plan is working and the destruction that’s going on.”Such vitriol directed at children reveals more than just a lack of judgment or empathy; rather, it reveals a level of cruelty and ideological fervor that are incompatible with judicial service. These comments alone are cause for demanding that his nomination be withdrawn.
The letter goes on to detail many other anti-LGBTQ actions and comments Mateer has made. As a judge, it would be his duty to suspend any bias and listen closely and carefully to all arguments and then being a voice for the government to bring justice in legal cases. Given his history, it is hard to believe that Mateer would be capable of doing that. His nomination should be challenged at every level.
Vice News has an in-depth article detailing the many anti-LGBTQ statements and actions Mateer has made. In one particularly jarring clip, Mateer openly admitted to discriminating against LGBTQ people. Listen:
