Anti-Transgender Bill Advances in South Dakota

February 22, 2019, 2:05 pm Today, legislation targeting transgender youth passed the South Dakota House of Representatives. South Dakota lawmakers have introduced a trio of discriminatory bills—HB 1205/SB 49, HB 1108, and HB 1225—that target transgender kids’ access to medical care, accurate health education and their ability to participate in sports. HB 1108, which just passed the House of Representatives, would prohibit educators from including gender identity or gender expression in their curricula in kindergarten through seventh grade in South Dakota’s public schools.

February 8, 2019, 3:15 pm In his second State of the Union Address, President Trump made no mention of LGBTQ Americans, but did pledge to eradicate HIV and AIDS from the United States by 2030. Bipartisan bills prohibiting discrimination against LGBTQ people have been introduced in several state legislatures ahead of the introduction of the Equality Act in Congress, which would solidify federal LGBTQ protections.

January 25, 2019, 12:19 pm Today New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) into law, providing explicit and comprehensive protections for transgender people from discrimination in employment, housing, public spaces, and education. GENDA passed in the Assembly by 100-40 and was approved by a vote of 42-19 in the Senate, both with bipartisan support.
